AC-11. Clinical Cases of Emerging Pathogens
Originally Presented: October 1, 2008
Speaker: Steven D. Dallas
Summary of Session: An exciting aspect of clinical microbiology is that there is always something new, whether with the microbes encountered or new technologies to detect them. From viruses to ectoparasites, this session will detail specific patient cases where the infection was caused by an emerging or re-emerging pathogen. The presenter will address diagnostic approaches and the importance of communication with the clinician to solve the cases.
Objectives: Upon completion of this Teleconference, participants should be able to:
- Describe environmental and societal factors that influence pathogen emergence.
- Interpret specific patient histories, symptoms, and lab data that suggest infection with new or re-emerging diseases.
- Choose additional microbiology tests to help confirm diagnoses.
- Summarize key questions to ask clinicians to help solve difficult or unusual cases.
Intended Audience: tba
