AC-06. Gram-Stains: Raising the Bar

Summary of Session: This teleconference is intended to elevate the science of interpretation of Gram stains. It will cover guidelines for standardization, host cell response and pathologic indicators seen in Gram stains, and bacterial morphology. The goal is to provide the clinician with sound information for improved patient management.
Objectives: Upon completion of this Teleconference, participants should be able to:
- Have gained a working knowledge of characteristic patterns of inflammation, other indicators of pathology, and patterns pathognomonic of specific infectious syndromes
- Evaluated proposed guidelines for standardization of Gram staining, smear preparation, staining method, evaluation for specimen quality, pathology, microbial morphotype reporting, and suggestions for competency testing
Intended Audience: Microbiologists with at least moderate experience in reading Gram stains
