Summary of Session: Antibiotic susceptibility testing methodology has become more sophisticated, but microbiology laboratories continue to be faced with challenges because of new bacterial mechanisms of resistance, new antibiotics, and technical problems with susceptibility testing. This session will review some of the recent challenges laboratories face in presenting accurate susceptibility data to clinicians.

Objectives: Upon completion of this Teleconference, participants should be able to:

  • Identify what these types of resistance look like based on the organism's susceptibility patter; and
  • Prepare guidelines for technologists to use for confirmation of susceptibility test results and result reporting.

Intended Audience: Division C, medical technologists, supervisors and directors in laboratories that perform susceptibility testing, intermediate level
