Summary of Session: The combined ICAAC/IDSA held in October, 2008 was very informative and provided attendees with innovative, scientific, and clinical information for the practice of microbiology and infectious diseases. The goal of this audioconference is to provide participants with an overview of highlights related to the practice of microbiology including epidemiology, antimicrobial therapy, and advances in technology.
Objectives: Upon completion of this Teleconference, participants should be able to: - Apply the concepts and clinical relevance of MIC creep analysis and resistance in Staphylococcus aurues;

Discuss newer anti-Gram-positive antibiotics as alternatives to vancomycin;
- Discuss current trends and concepts regarding the epidemiology, detection, control, and novel strategies for the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection;
- Apply updates in susceptibility testing; and
- Discuss hot topics in the disciplines of mycology, parasitology, and virology.
Intended Audience: Microbiologists, Medical Technologists, Infection Control Personnel, Laboratory Directors, and Infectious Disease Practitioners.
