Date
: August 25, 2010
Speaker: Rebecca Horvat

Summary of Session: This teleconference will contrast and compare tests used to determine exposure to Mycobacteria tuberculosis. It will examine the utility of tuberculin skin testing (TST) versus the cell based QuantiferonŽ assay. There will be a discussion addressing the principles of the assays, the utility of each assay and the limitations of each assay. Situations will be highlighted to indicate when testing may be useful. This presentation will also give details on the performance of each assay and how to interpret and report the results.

Objectives: Upon completion of this Teleconference, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the methods used of testing patients for exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis by tuberculin skin test and compare to the testing with the cell based Quantiferon assay.
  • Evaluate the interpretation of each assay and the indication for clinical use based on scientific literature.
  • Evaluate the interpretation of each assay and the indication for clinical use based on scientific literature.
  • Determine when these tests would be useful in making clinical decisions.
