Summary of Session: With methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) increasing its hold on both the healthcare and community setting it is important for the microbiology laboratory to understand how clinicians make treatment decisions. This teleconference will review current treatment options for MRSA and share information about best practices when reporting culture and susceptibility results.

Objectives: Upon completion of this Teleconference, participants should be able to:

  • List the current treatment options for MRSA and their use in practice.
  • Explain the role of vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentrations in treatment outcomes for MRSA.
  • Describe the risks associated with routinely reporting MRSA susceptibilities for some agents such as daptomycin, tigecycline, fluoroquinolones, and rifampin.

Intended Audience: This teleconference is intended for Clinical microbiologists and technologists.
