This teleconference will review the antimicrobial susceptibility testing recommendations for 2009 and 2010 from the CLSI. These reflect continued emerging resistance among common bacterial pathogens and the need to update interpretive breakpoints for many commonly used, but older antibiotics.

Objectives: Upon completion of this Teleconference, participants should be able to:

  • Participants will become aware of the new CLSI breakpoints for several cephalosporins and aztreonam when testing the Enterobacteriaceae
  • Participants will recognize those commonly prescribed antibiotics whose breakpoints need to be updated to reflect newer pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles
  • Participants will be able to develop their own laboratories’ strategies for susceptibility reporting during the transition period when commercial devices are being updated with the new breakpoints
  • Participants will become aware of impending changes regarding testing of fastidious or infrequently encountered bacteria.

Intended Audience: This teleconference is intended for practicing clinical microbiologists, supervisors, laboratory directors, infection preventionists.
